Hurricane Katrina: Mississippi Remembers
WLBT3 coverage of the exhibit
Temporary Exhibition Design for the Two Mississippi Museums in Jackson, Mississippi
‘Hurricane Katrina: Mississippi Remembers - Photographs by Melody Golding’ commemorated the 20th anniversary of the catastrophic storm. This exhibit highlighted the resilience of Mississippians through the lens of a photographer who spent months along the Gulf Coast capturing the aftermath of this tragedy.
This exhibit was organized in three parts: disaster, reconstruction, and resilience. The disaster section featured photographs and artifacts of the destruction along the coast, but as the exhibit went on, we incorporated more personal photos of survivors, their homes, and their stories. It showcased how brave the people of Mississippi were during this time while much of the news and relief efforts focused on New Orleans.
I feel it necessary to include this quote from Morgan Freeman after his visit to the exhibit, because how often do you get to include a review from MORGAN FREEMAN about your work?
“This exhibit was outstanding! While walking through the exhibit, I was struck with a balance between reflection, deep empathy, and a recognition of resilience. Katrina took buildings and lives, but it could not take the spirit of Mississippians.” — Morgan Freeman
